I was going to post this on your last entry, but I didn't get around to it, so I'll do it here.
Have you ever seen the movie When Harry Met Sally? In it, Harry talks about the possibility of one missing the idea of their ex but not the ex in reality. Perhaps you miss the idea of Aaron, but not the actual Aaron? I don't know what you think, but this is a suggestion.
Also, I think deep down he would appreciate it, but he won't show it because of how he is. That being the case, it's a tough choice to make about whether you should do something or not. Like I said above, I don't know what you think, but this is just a suggestion.
